Jeannette In Japan

In front of 'Ground-Zero' at Hiroshima

Wednesday, October 20, 2010
Even before the designated 8:30 am departure time, we’re off in a Japanese-sized bus. Each of us seemed to have a carry-on suitcase plus a large bag-like purse (except the guys). Suitcases needed to settle in the aisle which is where our guides ended up as well (on pull down seats, what a good idea!)

By ferry we’re off to Miyajima Island, a UNESCO designated world cultural centre. We can see rafts floating on the sea, oyster beds, we’re told. Hiroshima is the best place in Japan to enjoy oysters, especially in the late fall to winter season.

As we approach Miyajima Island, we see a huge vermillion-colored Torii Gate (16 meters high weighing 60 tons) made of camphor logs. It used to be the entrance to the island, and the gate to the Shinto shrine. No part of it is buried in the ground, there’s no man-made foundation; it’s merely sitting on the rock below the water. To prevent it from floating away, the crosspiece under the roof is box-like, filled with stones. One end of the crosspiece has the symbol of a sun, the other end the moon, the principle of Yin and Yang. The Torii gate is used for a festival every August when residents go the mainland when the moon is full and the tide is high.

We’re told Miyajima means shrine island. Since ancient times it has been regarded as a sacred island where God of Miyajima lives. To keep this island purified, its small population has had severe restrictions (forbidden to till the ground, to weave, to keep a dog or cat, to give birth or to be buried). To this day no one is buried here.

Deer greeted us when we arrived. They’re considered to be a messenger of the God, but we’re warned these ‘messengers’ will eat anything –paper, plastic straps, laces….

The Itsukushima Shrine is our destination. At the entrance to this shrine (and every Shinto shrine) is a water basin used in the purification ritual (wash your left hand, then your right hand, rinse your mouth and then clean the handle of the ladle).

The Itsukushima Shrine was first built in 593. There are additional shrines in its compound, each dedicated to its own gods or goddesses. We see the Purification Hall were a sacred stick is used to cleanse and purify the person before he or she prays to the gods in the Main Hall (throw money into the offertory box, bow twice, clap hands twice and bow again.)

Along the streets to the shrine there are 108 stone lanterns. In Buddhism it is said that man has 108 worldly sins and desires. On New Year’s Eve at midnight, every temple bell in Japan booms 108 times to ring out those worldly sins and desires.

Some of us walked up the long stairway to the 5-storied pagoda. Each roof represents the five elements: heaven, earth, air, fire and water.

Now we’re stopping at the many souvenir shops and restaurants along the street. Rice scoops and carvings are a traditional trade. Soft ice cream comes in an unusual flavor, green tea. Another common treat is a waffle in the shape of a maple leaf (a tree native to Hiroshima). We observe the automatic machine producing these in the shop window. The traditional filling was sweetened bean paste, but now they come with chocolate and custard cream cheese filling.

Too soon it’s time to ferry to the mainland. We board the bullet train, transfer to another train and arrive at a welcoming party at Gifu. What a rousing surprise the club has for us at a hall –a drum concert (as well as a variety of sweets and drinks). Then off to the home of our host.

2010 Gomke Reunion & Carnival

"Like branches from a tree
we grow in different directions,
But our roots are
planted in the same soil."

Thanks to everyone who helped to make the recent Gomke Reunion & Carnival a success. It turned out to be a great day where young and old had a chance to interact and have some fun with the great games everyone contributed--from Olga's Milking Cow, the Chicken Toss, Potato Ball, GWC--Gomke World Cup, Fishing Game, The Musical Margaret Walk, Mini-Pool table, Bowling, Beanbag, and more...complete with popcorn, hot dogs, and cotton candy...as well as the Bouncy Castle, Horseshoes, and Beanbag Baseball! Of course the day wouldn't be complete without the traditional abundant Potluck supper!

A total of 73 people were in attendance at the Longfellow Hall, including 13 kids, 1 clown, and 3 dogs. The weather cooperated for the most part, despite a brief afternoon shower where the hard-core horseshoers continued in the rain as well as the castle bouncers. The day was topped off with some musical entertainment and the evening 'firepit', before the final farewells at the Sunday brunch...as we all parted ways until the next reunion, 2012...

Some Carnival Details...

...please add water wings to the 'What to Bring' Reunion Checklist!
Yes, just to confirm, that all is still well for the upcoming Gomke Reunion at Longfellow Hall, despite the recent flooding conditions.

Also, as the date draws closer, families are likely starting to think about their Carnival Game...(but hopefully not stressing?!). To make it a bit easier, I've compiled an 'inspiration'/idea list that can hopefully help with the planning process...

  • Think birthday party..."Pin the Tail on the Donkey" (or any variation there-of).

  • Do you have a kitty pool? Place bowls in the water to toss something (pennies?)--points for how many end up in a bowl, etc?

  • Duct tape hoola hoops to the top of chairs--make a frisbee course--a 'win' if you get it through all hoops?

  • Are you a golfer? Do you have a little home putting green? A win when you sink the putt in less than ? hits? (or whenever you sink the putt?)

  • Squirt guns and ping pong balls--use the squirt gun to maneuver the ping pong ball through a table-top course? 2 people at at time...first one to the end wins? (have a pail of water handy to refill squirt guns).

  • Bouncy Ball or Baseball toss--use a case of sealers or pails and toss 3 bouncy balls, etc. A 'win' if you get one in (or all 3?)

  • Ring toss, kids horseshoe toss, lawn darts and a ring, etc.

  • BINGO

  • Musical Chairs

  • and anything else?....hope this helps give you some ideas...

See photos from a recent School Carnival.

How the Games Work

At the Carnival "Kick-off" (11:00), kids will get a Carnival Passport where they will collect a stamp for each of the 9 games (named after each primary member--the intent is to help generate some awareness of these members to the younger generation):
  • A stamp is earned after a 'win', so it may be possible that the game has to be played a number of times to earn the 'win' (i.e. certain number of points, a competition win, a successful feat, etc.).

  • Design the game to include what the participant must do to 'win' (earn a stamp).

  • Stamps will be provided with a Sign designating your primary family member.

  • All 9 stamps collected entitles the participant to collect their loot bag and enter the draw for a additional prizes.

  • Participants can continue to play games to collect another 9 stamps to enter the draw again.

  • Families are requested to submit their game plan at Friday Registration (so any instructions can be included during the 'Kick-off').

  • Carnival Game set-up is the responsibility of each family group prior to the 11:00 start on Saturday, July 3rd.

Who Knew?...

"Largest dinosaur graveyard found near Hilda, Alberta."

Who would have ever guessed that Hilda's claim to fame might be from an era 76 million years ago! It is doubtful that Charlotte and Reinholdt Gomke realized the archeological treasures that lay beneath the very land that they were farming. According the the article below, "Scientists in Alberta have discovered the largest dinosaur bonebed ever documented--along with evidence of massive carnage--near Hilda, 50 kms north of Medicine Hat". It is believed that tropical storms flooded the area and caused great herds of land-dwelling dinosaurs to perish. Well...the tropical part is a bit hard to imagine, but certainly not the flooding!

The Centrosaurus (along with other horned dinosaurs), believed to have lived in the Hilda area at one time.

June Flooding

"It never rains, but it pours!"
Yes, farmers always want rain...but perhaps this is a bit more than anyone wished for? Seems Southern Alberta is being hit with flood warnings and excessive precipitation this June. Here are some photos taken by Geoff and Amanda Roth near Schuler, Alberta. Fortunately they are on higher ground, although it seems not everyone is so fortunate.

Grad--Two Years Ago

It was today, June 13, two years ago (2008) that was my Master's Grad Convocation at the University of Calgary (Masters of Educational Leadership). It was one of the happiest days...partly because my family was there to celebrate with me, and especially my Grandma Roth (Olga--who passed away one year later, nearly to the day, June 5, 2009). Remembering this day with gratitude and warm memories...

Oprah in New York

After many months of entering an on-line 'lottery draw' for tickets to an Oprah Winfrey Show, the goal was finally realized and Pam Zollner along with 3 friends went to New York City to attend an Oprah show taping. Although the show is usually taped in Chicago, this was a special episode at Radio City Music Hall in NYC to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of 'O' Magazine. Pam was among 5000 audience members who were able to see guests Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, Suze Orman, Nate Berkus, and several others, as well as the singing performance by Christina Aguilera. The episode was taped and aired on Fri. May 7th.

Pam also participated in the "Live Your Best Life" Oprah Charity Walk on Sunday from the NY Hudson River to Times Square where Oprah, Gail King, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige and more spoke/sang to the large crowd. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a great thrill & opportunity to see the iconic Oprah Winfrey in person (albeit at a distance!).

Picking up the tickets--finally I have them in my hand!

Graduation Announcement--Sharon Roth

On 12 June 2009, Sharon Roth graduated from the University of Maastricht, The Netherlands with an International Executive Masters of Business Administration designation. The EMBA designation was presented to Sharon by the Director of Academics from the University of Maastricht. Sharon's graduating class colleagues included Danish, American, Dutch, Mexican, Puerto Rican, German and Belgian nationalities.

The most special and memorable moment was the fact that family members such as Sharon's husband Scott Godsoe, along with her older brother Laverne Roth and her sister-in-law, Rita had just happened to plan on being on a European vacation at the same time were able to share and witness the momentous event. In traditional European style, Sharon and Scott hosted various celebrations with their old close friends from Sittard, The Netherlands area and with their new friends, work colleagues and neighbours in Gries, Germany area.

Shortly after the celebrations, Sharon and Scott returned to Canada with Laverne and Rita to enjoy a short vacation time with family in Medicine Hat, their granddaughter's(Sharon and Scott's) graduation in Quesnel, B.C., and a time-out with the whole Godsoe clan in Sun Peaks, B.C. Scott and Sharon are fully embedded within the German and international business culture in the Gries (not Greece) area in Germany in which they thoroughly enjoy their ongoing European vacation. Sharon Roth is the daughter of Esther Roth (nee Gomke).

Children of Rena Wuerfel, and grandchildren of Laverne and Rita Roth played at Kimberly BC in an accordion competition. Cordena is 16 and Colton 11, Colton came home with some 'firsts' and some cash.

Lordy, look who's 40!!

Penita Schnell turned 40 on January 5th, with a surprise party from her husband Noel on New Year's Eve. Family and friends celebrated the big birthday, along with a surprise appearance by her sister Penella from Dubai. (Penita is the granddaughter of the late Olga Roth [Gomke]).

Rena Wuerfel had a big birthday on January 8th. Oh lordy, Rena is 40! Celebrating with a tropical theme, family and friends had a surprise party for her via slide show sent over Internet and Roxy (from Salmon Arm www.roxyfx.com/about.html ) singing a song for her on skype (an awesome way to 'be there', when you're not). (Rena is the granddaughter of Esther Roth [Gomke]).

House Fire Remembered--One Year Ago

On December 27, 2008, Jolene (Jans) and Trevor Warburton had a house fire at 10:30pm. Everyone was in the house at the time of the fire but were able to leave before the fire was on the top floor. They lived with Jolene's father Dale and step mother until June 1, 2009 when they bought a holiday trailer to live in. Their house was gutted and rebuilt. On July 1st, 2009, Trevor, Jolene, Tenley, Tripp, Harley and JD (Harley and JD are the dogs) were able to move back into their home.
