It was a sunny and beautiful June/July weekend at Longfellow Hall for the many Gomke descendants of all ages to reconnect, and of course enjoy the food, games, and musical entertainment, (thanks to all those who participated in the evening program!). There was even a special guest appearance by 'Elvis'! Everyone enjoyed themselves at the 2012 Reunion...and can now look forward to the next one in 2014 (thanks to the new committee volunteer members, Crystal & Dustin Gomke). Please consider joining them to help plan the next reunion.<br />

Each of us seemed to have a carry-on suitcase plus a large bag-like purse (except the guys). Suitcases needed to settle in the aisle which is where our guides ended up as well (on pull down seats, what a good idea!)<br /><br />By ferry we’re off to Miyajima Island, a UNESCO designated world cultural centre. We can see rafts floating on the sea, oyster beds, we’re told. Hiroshima is the best place in Japan to enjoy oysters, especially in the late fall to winter season.<br /><br />As we approach Miyajima Island, we see a huge vermillion-colored Torii Gate (16 meters high weighing 60 tons) made of camphor logs. It used to be the entrance to the island, and the gate to the Shinto shrine. No part of it is buried in the ground, there’s no man-made foundation; it’s merely sitting on the rock below the water. To prevent it from floating away, the crosspiece under the roof is box-like, filled with stones. One end of the crosspiece has the symbol of a sun, the other end the moon, the principle of Yin and Yang. The Torii gate is used for a festival every August when residents go the mainland when the moon is full and the tide is high.<br /><br />We’re told Miyajima means shrine island. Since ancient times it has been regarded as a sacred island where God of Miyajima lives. To keep this island purified, its small population has had severe restrictions (forbidden to till the ground, to weave, to keep a dog or cat, to give birth or to be buried). To this day no one is buried here.<br /><br />Deer greeted us when we arrived. They’re considered to be a messenger of the God, but we’re warned these ‘messengers’ will eat anything –paper, plastic straps, laces….<br /><br />The Itsukushima Shrine is our destination. At the entrance to this shrine (and every Shinto shrine) is a water basin used in the purification ritual (wash your left hand, then your right hand, rinse your mouth and then clean the handle of the ladle).<br /><br />The Itsukushima Shrine was first built in 593. There are additional shrines in its compound, each dedicated to its own gods or goddesses. We see the Purification Hall were a sacred stick is used to cleanse and purify the person before he or she prays to the gods in the Main Hall (throw money into the offertory box, bow twice, clap hands twice and bow again.)<br /><br />Along the streets to the shrine there are 108 stone lanterns. In Buddhism it is said that man has 108 worldly sins and desires. On New Year’s Eve at midnight, every temple bell in Japan booms 108 times to ring out those worldly sins and desires.<br /><br />Some of us walked up the long stairway to the 5-storied pagoda. Each roof represents the five elements: heaven, earth, air, fire and water.<br /><br />Now we’re stopping at the many souvenir shops and restaurants along the street. Rice scoops and carvings are a traditional trade. Soft ice cream comes in an unusual flavor, green tea. Another common treat is a waffle in the shape of a maple leaf (a tree native to Hiroshima). We observe the automatic machine producing these in the shop window. The traditional filling was sweetened bean paste, but now they come with chocolate and custard cream cheese filling.<br /><br />Too soon it’s time to ferry to the mainland. We board the bullet train, transfer to another train and arrive at a welcoming party at Gifu. What a rousing surprise the club has for us at a hall –a drum concert (as well as a variety of sweets and drinks). Then off to the home of our host. </span></p><p><span style="font-size:85%;">Submitted by Jeannette Zollner</span> </p>Miss Zollner's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03830675884551567514noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2522667521518181243.post-65428966229501093792010-11-09T21:21:00.000-08:002010-11-09T21:43:51.992-08:00Helen Turner Family Photos<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtZfgf-jGtPyKlchipeN_kslHKzqMsMA0dLvrCJ_5wjU_A0_s4FUyT9PmcCmt5vQd2Q5RhfBAdgv7kz88FX2TrPSU3xgzJOVsTwsK5-Z_dSKXnwjg4F46bzVaYpDVvbWsyBbsqtj9P7OIQ/s1600/Helen_great+grandkids.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 106px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 160px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5537792038028058802" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtZfgf-jGtPyKlchipeN_kslHKzqMsMA0dLvrCJ_5wjU_A0_s4FUyT9PmcCmt5vQd2Q5RhfBAdgv7kz88FX2TrPSU3xgzJOVsTwsK5-Z_dSKXnwjg4F46bzVaYpDVvbWsyBbsqtj9P7OIQ/s320/Helen_great+grandkids.jpg" /></a> - Great Grandma Turner (Helen), Emily Hudson, & Lorna Turner- Emily's Grade<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPzNeLs6Q1Khx04_YkBN9PHNNpt9QShyphenhyphenRxb4wZkHebWoSq5DpJc0dIOzdLiDXMDthrwt-gPEJJQrGiWd98iUb98Rs5pPqtj81Pol_gQVfOWVXiVstyZPsyJcV9dXrcNuwXRjeSdGiGAOH6/s1600/Helen+and+family.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 213px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 160px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5537791695291451394" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPzNeLs6Q1Khx04_YkBN9PHNNpt9QShyphenhyphenRxb4wZkHebWoSq5DpJc0dIOzdLiDXMDthrwt-gPEJJQrGiWd98iUb98Rs5pPqtj81Pol_gQVfOWVXiVstyZPsyJcV9dXrcNuwXRjeSdGiGAOH6/s320/Helen+and+family.jpg" /></a> 4 Awards Night- Received Honours (Emily is daughter to Kelley & Josh Hudson, Grand Daughter to Gary & Lorna Turner)<br /><br />- Fall Photo of Emily (age 10) and Hailey Hudson (age 6). It turned out to be a great day where young and old had a chance to interact and have some fun with the great games everyone contributed--from Olga's Milking Cow, the Chicken Toss, Potato Ball, GWC--Gomke World Cup, Fishing Game, The Musical Margaret Walk, Mini-Pool table, Bowling, Beanbag, and more...complete with popcorn, hot dogs, and cotton candy...as well as the Bouncy Castle, Horseshoes, and Beanbag Baseball! Of course the day wouldn't be complete without the traditional abundant Potluck supper!<br /><br />A total of 73 people were in attendance at the Longfellow Hall, including 13 kids, 1 clown, and 3 dogs. The weather cooperated for the most part, despite a brief afternoon shower where the hard-core horseshoers continued in the rain as well as the castle bouncers. The day was topped off with some musical entertainment and the evening 'firepit', before the final farewells at the Sunday brunch...as we all parted ways until the next reunion, 2012...<br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 214px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490823199825450946" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiMeGwDGnoAfZrAHH4rXI9khUM-r3Jbe2YlmJOeEPsN7UNZaa5LQMxv6g8Ksy2m9vqriXghfAsjfZPR7AT0sOL-OVtK1Is4UjRVhh6dPIk7v9v7PPjFPFtGlJmAqi27FlausLEslGcsMQ7/s320/IMG_2371.JPG" /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 214px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490819773108432402" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwPUxIfpo3Oxv9Ec_59rDJt17eSOE0XhNV2ygiV2mg-B2FlSKUBf0WY3CdV3YyozrWFKIPMkpQ3qSr5BVyvjQUWVVUqurUTYWYmFKQyIkVB-3kn9hMdhdJAD7B7fZXbiBHHCjqqtVXpwlB/s320/IMG_2387.JPG" /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 214px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490820806982449426" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip0YhDgA05__iUACli22E40skj_bt05UUh3VcT63tguNFbFeaI0ymbFcNMQ2JcrCKrHbsw7OKVluL0P8IX13qh1O0CrDUHRRXh8f92i3FNz3XalLNatOM-sXrjudRkIq4Y5cmJKi6mJpJc/s320/IMG_2527.JPG" /><br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwr0M2hdGA7__qH_fHH3i2e-kZoVcBFyTn-kC_xCFtHkSlQYKNn2RKiLKJhSUJ_FGaghsF2V6uKs587M9sSon5OzWeKPNgLSvWi5ezDfB11ZCBwmEPrGcvQGwFgP4apfWcNJGu3unD3hLA/s1600/IMG_2452.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 214px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490816542461097234" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwr0M2hdGA7__qH_fHH3i2e-kZoVcBFyTn-kC_xCFtHkSlQYKNn2RKiLKJhSUJ_FGaghsF2V6uKs587M9sSon5OzWeKPNgLSvWi5ezDfB11ZCBwmEPrGcvQGwFgP4apfWcNJGu3unD3hLA/s320/IMG_2452.JPG" /></a><span style="font-size:130%;"></span></div>Miss Zollner's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03830675884551567514noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2522667521518181243.post-31625191805156944232010-07-06T07:33:00.000-07:002010-07-06T08:23:02.203-07:00Gomke Reunion 2010--Farewell Interviews<p>Check out the interviews of young and old for the 2010 Gomke 'Carnival' Reunion! </p><p><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxsRkBfaNcjQeok3N9wGIdvYKtxPh-B9tYntPH7Z29FcgusUirfOlDc4BVQEzxCn6v3BpAZ4OAT1_JS7WW6ZA' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></p><p><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwXlEVZ06tOzm31CAHQrnohHXMX7AmtW19rfRyO70klz4fG_L7fsTigelaWMds7c_PjAhoL3c8fnSBJmX4hEw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe> </p><p></p><p><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dz4BycyxkYO6N8qvq4tK2Ng4xb_kQBU0m3Ruui2UhwqD0qm0uypKNP1gdhnt9UvwEJuCSf-D8zMkXkKoK45Lg' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></p><p> </p><p><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzThwMQRT8B731787LKEp0zjCP8e1RaVWZtOp51uzJBJahCd-sOL0k2f7Ne3rURhKebAa5SK-sipT1RXxFj_A' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></p><p> </p>Miss Zollner's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03830675884551567514noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2522667521518181243.post-55756547073512257892010-06-24T19:20:00.000-07:002010-06-24T20:50:33.776-07:00Some Carnival Details...<div align="center"><strong>...please add water wings to the 'What to Bring' Reunion Checklist! </strong></div><div align="left">Yes, just to confirm, that all is still well for the upcoming Gomke Reunion at Longfellow Hall, despite the recent flooding conditions.</div><br /><br /><div align="left">Also, as the date draws closer, families are likely starting to think about their Carnival Game...(but hopefully not stressing?!). It is doubtful that Charlotte and Reinholdt Gomke realized the archeological treasures that lay beneath the very land that they were farming. According the the article below, "Scientists in Alberta have discovered the largest dinosaur bonebed ever documented--along with evidence of massive carnage--near Hilda, 50 kms north of Medicine Hat". It is believed that tropical storms flooded the area and caused great herds of land-dwelling dinosaurs to perish. Well...the tropical part is a bit hard to imagine, but certainly not the flooding!</div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 145px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 94px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486527017925026530" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwNffk8u0VrSn-aDB63Sc6sz3O4DkHPSYxnNRdA8TA-uTx_9GyGSQ0Wvo1tGNnPTpnxrByt5B20z8OCISiZ_IlFTAvEANg9sUA5uoIjs45wSkAzB1cYyu-_mdMUDH31XpxjwnhDI2OjoWo/s320/centrosaurus.bmp" /> <p align="center">The Centrosaurus (along with other horned dinosaurs), believed to have lived in the Hilda area at one time. </p><p align="center"><br /><a href="http://news.ca.msn.com/local/calgary/article.aspx?cp-documentid=24612294">http://news.ca.msn.com/local/calgary/article.aspx?cp-documentid=24612294</a></p>Miss Zollner's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03830675884551567514noreply@blogger.com0
